2nd Graders Making Observations
This curious Bowley Bobcat is studying a plant and recording observations in a science journal. Exploration is encouraged to provoke critical thinking for students.

At Bowley Elementary, Ms. Jackson’s 2nd grade class is diving into the fascinating world of plants using the DoDEA FOSS (Full Option Science System) curriculum. The students have been conducting a hands-on investigation to learn about plant growth, structure, and the essential components plants need to thrive.

As part of their science unit, the young learners are observing the growth of various plants in the classroom. Each student has been assigned their own plant to nurture, and they are keeping detailed science journals to document the plants' changes over time. The excitement in the room is palpable as students eagerly check their plants each day, noting new leaves, stems, and even tiny buds.

Using magnifying glasses, rulers, and other science tools, Ms. Jackson’s students have been recording observations about the size, shape, and color of their plants. In their journals, they meticulously note how sunlight, water, and soil impact the growth, linking these observations to the broader concepts they are learning through the FOSS curriculum.

"Watching my plant grow taller every day is so cool! I even see little roots under the soil," said one excited student, flipping through the detailed notes in their journal.

Ms. Jackson expressed her enthusiasm for the project as well, stating, “This investigation allows students to take ownership of their learning. They're becoming mini scientists, observing and questioning the world around them. The FOSS curriculum really brings these concepts to life.”

The students are also practicing critical thinking by making predictions about their plants' future growth and comparing their plants to their classmates’. These comparisons help spark discussions about the importance of care, environment, and individual growth rates.

The photographs accompanying this article showcase the young scientists at work—some are bent over their plants with curiosity, while others diligently jot down notes in their journals. Each student’s unique approach to documenting their plant’s development reflects their growing understanding of scientific processes.

Through this plant investigation, Ms. Jackson’s 2nd grade class is not only learning about science but also developing important skills like patience, observation, and inquiry. As their plants continue to grow, so too does their passion for learning.

Bowley Elementary is proud of the outstanding work these budding botanists are doing, and we can’t wait to see what they discover next!
